The Mist is a movie based on a short story by Stephen King of the same name.

I am a fan of King for the most part. His novels have gotten lost and his later years dwell far too much on the "human monster" but his short stories still have a great kick to them.

The Mist is about a military experiment gone wrong ( yes, backdrop is overdone, very cliche, but it is an easy target.)

A small Maine town becomes enveloped in a "mist" ( which is really more of a fog, but because it seemed to originate coming cross over the lake from the mountain range behind it, it's called a "mist".
It appears the Mist is a cover for something , well, not very good. The army has been very naughty.

The casting includes Marcia Gay Harden and Thomas Jane ( both from "B" class movie backgrounds).

Frank Darabont directed and wrote the screenplay with some assistance from mr King himself.

The movie stays nominally close to the book storyline until the end. If you have read the story, what comes after they leave the house to venture further out is entirely Mr Darabont's creation.

It is intended no doubt to be a tragic, ironic ending, lending further to the miseries and failures of people to adapt and completely grasp their situation.

I don't really like the end, better they should have closed the movie without anything after the house.

Of course, they bill the movie as a masterpiece of the Horror genre and declare it one of the best ever. So Not.

Don't get me wrong. Overall, I think it's a pretty good movie. I'd watch it again. maybe not all the time, but once in a while. it would certainly be good enough to make it to your "halloween" movie list. Once a year.

The effects I have heard others describe poorly, which is one reason I wanted to watch the movie. To see if they were that bad.

I found they were pretty good overall. I think the folks who said that to me has a collapse of imagination.
