Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong
I'm a Canadian but I live in the US and my kids go to school here so they are directly affected by what this author is talking about.
The book is about the sugar coating of people and events that is rampant in most history text books used in American History classes in high school. He talks about the reluctance to admit that real people have warts and that not everything the US does is wonderful or for noble causes.
I've just started the book and learned that Helen Keller was a strident socialist, and that Woodrow Wilson was racist, plain and simple. The book is extensively end noted and seems very well researched.
Note the authors intention is not come across as some sort of left wing America basher, but to point out that not giving the true, full picture of historical persons and events does an injustice to all and prevents people from truly learning from the past.
I can't wait to get home tonight and continue reading about Christopher Columbus. Although I knew that Viking explorers did reach my native eastern Canada well before other Europeans.
